Re: carbine 12221
Reading this thread made me wonder: Assume for the sake of argument that 12221 is a legitimate carbine receiver that was present at LBH (though the suggestion that some clerk back in the 19th century made a transcription error would always make me wonder!): How much more valuable would that receiver...

Re: Original 50/70 ammo
I'm curious: Not that I ever *would* (both from a safety and economy standpoint), but can black powder ammo produced back in the 1870s/1880s even fire now?

Re: Guns of the Modoc War, 1872-73
Actually, upon looking at the photo of the serial number I took, I think the rifle now in possession of the Fort Klamath Museum is the one sold by McPheeter a few years ago. I think the number could be read either as 8909 or 8969. It also fits the description McPheeter had on his website. IMG_1104.j...

Re: Guns of the Modoc War, 1872-73
Just to add another interesting data point on Modoc War-related rifles-- I was at the museum at Fort Klamath earlier this afternoon, and they have a M1868 with provenance attaching it to one of the Modoc. It is serial number is 8909 (meaning it was 60 away from the one on McPheeter's website). It ha...

Re: Guns of the Modoc War, 1872-73
For what it's worth, I know of one other "lava beds found" M1868 -- It is in the hands of the Merrill Historical Society. It was found by a rancher in the area (one who helped handle the Army's mules during the war) the winter following the conflict. After the war, all the way up until the...

Re: Guns of the Modoc War, 1872-73
This is a photo that Edward Muybridge took of a "Modoc Warrior" with a Spencer. It is now believed this was actually a Warm Springs scout in the Army's employ who "filled in" as a Modoc for purposes of the photo.

Re: Guns of the Modoc War, 1872-73
The title got my interest since I used to work at the Lava Beds and my family farm is in Tulelake. I am a Modoc War nerd! Here is the NPS' take on the army's weaponry (this is what Tom referenced in his post above): https://www.nps.gov/parkhistory/online_books/labe/modocwaraf.htm "Most of the c...

Are you in the San Francisco area? The gunstore says they have had it for c. 2 months.Lead Snowstorm wrote: ↑Sat Dec 02, 2023 9:29 pm I could swear I've seen that one before. The weird notches on the rear sight base are ringing a bell.
