I have one that I have owned for a bunch of years. 20+. You can make a new front sight blade from a piece of brass. I shoot a smokeless load in it. Not a great deer killer so far as dropping them in their tracks. I find that that big lead bullet just goes right through them and they bleed out.

I’m thinking about buying a hollow pointing tool to use on my .50/70’s, .45/70’s and .44/77’s for hunting. Even with dead soft slugs the bullets really do resist mushrooming and penetrate completely. A soft hollow point would work quite well for deer I imagine. For elk and moose I’ll stick with solid lead slugs. If you read old literature they mention very light for caliber and hollow point bullets pretty often for most medium game.

I t does have the original base with a replaced pin , fairly sure the german silver sight in it is not original due to it's shape. I just need to find a rear sight w/ screw for it and I'd be happy. I put 40+ rounds through it sunday and 10 more this afternoon. Impacts "a mile high". Main issue is the huge buckhorn rear sight on the original dovetail. If anyone has a lead on a carbine rear sight assy...plz let me know.

Check S&S, www.ssfirearms.com

They have a reproduction that is excellent. The biggest problem with it is that it looks like it was made yesterday (because it was, more or less). https://www.ssfirearms.com/proddetail.asp?prod=SH208

Did the sights get newmade or recalibrated for the 50/70 conversions ?.

I don't believe they did anything with the sights. The conversions I have handled had the same Lawrence sight and ladder as the paper cartridge guns.
