Bayonet Question

Post by jeffd »

Has anyone known an M1873 bayonet to have the "US" ground or filed off and restamped below it? Thanks

Are you sure it was the U S that was ground off does some ghost of it remain? perhaps it was a different foreign bayonet that was ground and remarked for a better sale price. please post a picture of it close up of the Grind and marking areas. Also an overall shot with and without scabbard.

I think I'm pretty sure as to what happened here. I have packed it up to send back to the seller, so I can't post pictures. This bayonet was cleaned up (sanded with emery cloth?) and re-blued, probably with cold blue. During the cleaning process, most of the "US" was sanded off leaving a faint image of the original. Somebody then re-stamped the bayonet, just below the original, with a stamp that is just a little different font. One of those things you can't see in pictures, but can when it's in your hands.
