I always thought that by reversing the old Civil War sight like that the leaf wouldn’t fall toward under recoil, which was probably known to happen.

That could be it, or at least part of the reason. Of course, we see 1866s with the sight set both ways, so, the whole thing's a little funky - until they finally settled down.
