A friend of mine has a U.S. marked Springfield trap door, 1873, S/N 149200.
How can we determine if this was issued to the 7th Cavalry? Or which unit it may have been issued to?
Thanks

The only records that are easily search are the five Springfield research service books. The Carbine 149200 is not listed. the two close to it are 149142 79C 3-14-88 troop C 7th cav. 149221 79C 10 09 80 8th. Cav. Your friends carbine was assembled in calendar year 1880. Hope this helps and no its not a rare 7th Cav. Little Big Horn survivor.

Actual "LBH/Custer period" 7th Cavalry carbines will all be well below 50,000, and must possesss a number of unique features. My 50+ year list must now be at around 1300 "possibles to a varying degree", including less than 70 numbers that are, or most likely are, the real McCoy . . .

Dick

Are you still looking for early SN's that are not listed in your book?

I have one. What is the best way (not in an open forum) to contact you? Is your email richardahosmer@comcast still good?
