Anyone know for sure what the “GG” stands for?

"xxxxxx Guards"?

Is that a guess, or is there any some documentation to confirm it?

Try Google books, search on “Groome guards” and you’ll find several entries.

Ed- Thanks, that sounds like a solid lead to explore.

It looks like the "Groome Guards" was one company of the Maryland National Guard in the trapdoor era. Located in Cecil County, MD, at the head of the Chesapeake Bay abutting Pennsylvania to the north and Delaware to the east.

While is it remotely possible that this 60 man company had special bayonet scabbard rosettes made up with "GG" it seems very unlikely as there do not seem to be any similar examples for any of the numerous other companies with individual traditional names, nor even for regiments such as the socially elite 4th or 5th Maryland with about 750 or so members.

I think the search needs to continue.
