Coming attraction

Post by John S. »

Still need a couple more photos, but will soon (within a week or so) post photos of one of the .50 caliber trapdoor pistols. Quite a few fakes out there but this is a real one and may be a good reference to use if someone offers you one in the future.

John'
I really look forward to seeing your pics of the 50/70 pistol. Many years ago, a large scale local dealer acquired what appeared to be a real one. He graciously allowed me to strip and photograph it for my own research. In my humble opinion, it could only have been faked by a dedicated and talented master machinist/artist, and in my own mind, it was real.
I've been looking for something to compare it with since that day. The gun is gone, and I doubt that the dealer even recalls the transaction--tracing it is unlikely. The pistol was built on a "short" receiver and used wood and furniture which appeared to come from the old 1842 series of percussion arms.
My pictures are "paper", but will send you copies if you like.
