M1888 Experimental Rifle, SN321208
M1888 Experimental Rifle, SN321208
I have seen about a dozen of these test rifles. They are found with the two piece trigger guard, two circle P firing proofs,
some times one or two cartouches. The cartouches are SWP/1888 and SWP/1889. If two cartouches, then they are stacked one
above the other. In this case, the receiver serial number is between two 28 inch rifle serial numbers that were issued in 1886.
The locking mechanism for the rod looks identical to the production mechanism, but the locking notches in the rod are 0.020 inches
closer and some of the shoulder surfaces have been tapered. The rifling in the gun is near perfect with a few specks about 4"
from the bore. Otherwise, the bore is excellent.
