Yep I'm a retired Coastie and all the line throwing guns I saw were 03's with C type stocks.

Yep, I have done it myself when rubbing down M1 and 1903 stocks with Linseed oil.

Numrich gun parts. H&R 1873. #1381381450 long, #1381440 short. $4.39 each. I would suggest you order several in case you lose another or at least order something else so the postage won't seem so ridicules.

I wonder what makes it fly open. I have one and it hasn't done that yet but I've only fired about 20 rounds. I'm sure you checked but do you think the latch slipped? I noticed the set screw and was thinking that might be a possibility.

If I remember correctly Hoppies warned about using it's bore cleaner on nickeled guns because it would remove it, of course they may have changed the formula.
