Re: 1868/70 question
Okay, we have a suggested method to remove the crud from the metal, but what about getting it off the wood? I would never use any "cleaner" on old original finish. I take vaseline and let it render in a high heat environment to get out most of the liquid 'oil" in it. You then have a ...

Re: 1868/70 question
I recently acquired an 1868/70 rifle that has a strange golden glow on the "in the white" parts. This is not a thick grease like material and is a very even color over the whole barrel. 1868-70 resize.jpgThere is a spot by the breach that shows the color cleaned. When I cleaned the bore t...

Re: Sharps 50-70 smokeless data?
My SR4759 is about gone. Looking at smokeless data for 50-70 I see several sources listing sometimes widely varying load data. With the 450 cast bullet, I see AA2495 listed at 29.5 grains up to 52 grains. I tried the 29.5 grain load but it lodged the bullets in the bore. Clearly not enough powder i...

Re: Remington rolling block questions ?
That's dang neat 58 centerfire , now I want one too !!!!. Good news is Bob Hoyt called me today and said he could make my rolling block 50/70 on the cheap as case rim dimensions for 50/70 work with 43 spanish extractor well enough. So for a literal pittance he will bore it out , rifle & chamber ...

Re: Rifle Identification
Yes it was from the NASA program and it is Water displacement 40. All I will ever use it for is scrubbing gun bores at best it's not a lubricant at all. When it dries it leaves metal exposed to rust. Kroil , PB blaster and WD 40 are great for bore cleaning and the first two for helping in surface ru...

Re: Four Digit number on Model 1968
Hello, I recently picked up this Springfield trapdoor Model 1868 that has a four digit number “4568” on the right side. The serial number on the left side is “29567” and the date is 1870 on the breech cover. Any idea what this number on the right is supposed to be? Receiver appears to be blued ?. A...

Re: Remington rolling block questions ?
Since it's 43 cal, Bobby can probably ream it up to 45 and re-rifle without sleeving the barrel. Have you discussed this project with him? The problem you will have is that you will almost certainly need to make a new extractor. If you have access to a machine shop it's not an awful job, but if you...
