Re: FFF black powder

Although cartridges are listed as 45-70 or 50-70, they don't hold 70 grains of powder. Usually, guys list loads of 63 or 65 gains. The FFFg will give you a bit of velocity boost over Cartridge or FFg, or even 1 1/2 Fg. I have shot FFFg in my flintlocks and caplocks for many years. Both .50 and .54 c...

Re: Sharps 50-70 smokeless data?

I was considering using a wad over the powder, then corn meal, and then seating the bullet onto the corn meal.
I remember reading about using corn meal vs Dacron puffs as a powder holder.
If it wasn't for the required cleaning of cases right after shooting, I would go to BP.

Sharps 50-70 smokeless data?

My SR4759 is about gone. Looking at smokeless data for 50-70 I see several sources listing sometimes widely varying load data. With the 450 cast bullet, I see AA2495 listed at 29.5 grains up to 52 grains. I tried the 29.5 grain load but it lodged the bullets in the bore. Clearly not enough powder ig...

Re: Vibrating tumbler

Cheap white rice does well in vibrating cleaners as well. The rice will become gray as dirt accumulates into the pores of the grains.
Picking medium out of the primer pockets as a chore no matter what. Just part of the process.

Re: Trapdoor carbine

Pull the butt plate to see if it has the chambers for the carbine ramrod and tools. A carbine rear sight can be had to replace whatever it is that is on it now. Definitely a cut-down but still fun to shoot. I have an original 1880 that was relined by Bob Hoyt. I try and take it out to hunt deer at l...

Re: 1884 trapdoor RN vs Spitzer

Curious to what your load is now. I relied on the Lee 405 HB with SR4759, but I am down to just a bit of that powder.

Re: 1884 trapdoor RN vs Spitzer

For the distances that I shoot, no. The heavy bullets are miserable to shoot due to recoil. Understand that I now only have a carbine, so my recoil will be more than anything in a rifle. I did try the 500 RN in carbine and rifle in the past but quickly decided that I got no better accuracy.

T/D Carbine price?

I hate to do it but I just can't shoot my carbine with the open sights. It is a 1880, slotted screws, full butt stock kit, barrel was relined by Bob Hoyt. Barrel is 3 groove, .458".
What is a fair price for it? I know it is hard to say for certain without photos, but better than average.
