Getting back into trapdoors after 30+ years...

About 1 1/2 years ago I lucked into a 50/70 trapdoor. Got brass , dies , and a 450gn mold. Had all that many years ago. I found another 50/70 which someone reblued and looks shortened about 4"...though it still sports an original front sight and a musket/allin type rear sight. Anyhow I just traded for a decent 1870 5-/70 complete barreled action w/complete rear sight. Think I'm going to put it in my other rifles stock ( both in the 41K serial range and maybe trade off that other 50/70 barreled action. It really is fun casting , loading and shooting these with Trail boss. Little smoke , no corrosive effects on metal or brass.
Since Al no longer is in the field is there any source for repro 1870 rifle cleaning rods ?.

Stay away from Dixie - they don't know rods from a hole in the ground. Also, be aware that there are two rods for the 1870. Early production continued using the single-shoulder rod from the 1868, then changed to ther double-shoulder later. Check your keeper.

Butch is the best source for repro rods of all kinds, and I think that S&S gets them from that source.

I just looked at Butch's website (had not heard of him), and those are some pretty piss-poor rods!! The hole in the 1884 looks like a child was running the hole-forming tool and the small end was bent and the grooves are funky. Someone should tell him that 1873 rods have either 7 or 6 rings, NEVER 5. Hopes dashed, I was expecting much better, from the reviews. Al used to know someone who did GOOD work; maybe he remembers who it was . . .

If your rifle has the single shoulder rod there is one on eBay at a decent price.

Thanks for the heads up on the rod. I contacted seller. How do you know which rod my rifle would take by looking at the lock piece in stock ?. Rifle is in the 41K serial range if that helps.
