My SR4759 is about gone. Looking at smokeless data for 50-70 I see several sources listing sometimes widely varying load data.
With the 450 cast bullet, I see AA2495 listed at 29.5 grains up to 52 grains. I tried the 29.5 grain load but it lodged the bullets in the bore.
Clearly not enough powder ignition. The IMR4198 load of 30 grains did actually fire all 5 cartridges, but accuracy was terrible, and I suspect that it too had ignition variations.
So for those who have a Sharps carbine, what is you secret to getting a good smokeless load?
I don't want to mess around with BP. The case cleaning is a pain and the groups were not that good.

Check this out . . . .

Re: Sharps 50-70 smokeless data?
Try 23 grains of AA 5744 with the Lyman 50-70 bullet (515141), or an equivalent bullet. That runs just under 1200 fps out of my M-1870 Trapdoor and no signs of excess pressure. Quickload guesses just under 11K psi. and nails the velocity prediction. I have fired this load in Sharps 50-70 carbine conversions with no problem, but don't have chrono data.

Re: Sharps 50-70 smokeless data?
I was considering using a wad over the powder, then corn meal, and then seating the bullet onto the corn meal.
I remember reading about using corn meal vs Dacron puffs as a powder holder.
If it wasn't for the required cleaning of cases right after shooting, I would go to BP.

I use trail boss to the base of the seated bullet. Works quite fine - zero corrosive issues.wstrayer wrote: ↑Thu Mar 27, 2025 11:13 am My SR4759 is about gone. Looking at smokeless data for 50-70 I see several sources listing sometimes widely varying load data.
