In Dick’s book on page 63 there’s a letter stamped in this location behind the rear flip site. It’s either a D or an S I think.

I went back and looked more closely and you’re correct. I think it’s just 4 cartouches now. There was the outline of what I thought was a faded 5th one but that just may be the grain/stain in the wood.

I had an 1870 Carbine marked with "S" behind the rear sight and a tiny "X" and "P" at the index mark. Perhaps this is peculiar to 1870 made 68's and 70's.
