COPYING OF FORUM FILES

X X X X X IMPORTANT X X X X X John is on the road with prior commitments and has asked me to coordinate copying of messages in the TWO to FIVE days we have left. I do not believe that we have time to sort out and agree on who is going to do what, so I suggest that everyone who can, copy as many MEANINGFUL messages as they can. Id rather have duplicates than omissions. Dont worry about format or punctuation - those can be fixed later. I am going to start at the beginning, and concentrate on Als posts. All hands on deck and save as much as you can. Thanks.

Happy New Year to all my friends, especially those who helped cheer me up last year, when I was in the ICU.

A very Happy New Year to everyone here. We have much to be thankful for, including the fact that we, and our trapdoors, are all another year older. Special thanks to Al Frasca for hosting our group.

Sighting for 100 yard targets
Posted by Albert Frasca on Wednesday, 6 January 2021, at 9:40 a.m.
I was told by Randy Ebbers that if you have a Buffington rear sight, the rifle can be zeroed-in at 100 yards by raising the ladder and lowering the slide and aiming at the target using the peep hole at the base of the slider. Let me know if this works for you. PAl

This tiny aperature is what I use but I had to make a taller front sight to get a 100 yard zero.

We had that same thing today at the range. by moving the slide to just expose the peep and holding a deep six o clock. It works on the NRA 100 yard target. Load was 60 grains bulk 2 FG Goex and a Paul Jones 465 grain .462 diameter bullet.

Thanks guys for your input. Tom, please clarify what you mean by a deep six on the target. Al

Al, I refer to placing the tip of the front sight at the bottom of the 100 yard 8 inch bull tq-4 small bore target and leave a sliver of light between the bull and blade. Also remember that this can change depending on the bullet weight and powder loads used.

No cartouche
Posted by Greg Pohl on Monday, 11 January 2021, at 2:48 a.m.
Greetings folks. I am planning to take my first step in trapdoor collecting. I’m sure this topic has come many times so I apologize in advance for my ignorance. Currently looking at a model 1866 and an 1870. To my novice eye the hardware appears to be correct based on limited research but neither has any sort of cartouche on the stock that I can find. Please tell me what this signifies, if anything. Many thanks.

No cartouche means a pretty well-worn gun, usually at least a trace remains. Of course, if the stock is not worn then it must be a replacement - then comes the questions, where, when, and by whom. As to the 1870, be sure that you are getting a real 1870, with the short receiver. A GREAT many so-called 1870s, which is a fairly scarce model, are simply 1868s - which have the long receiver - made in 1870. Big difference in value all other things being equal. Look at the pictures and production figures on the main page.

Just to amplify on Dicks comments. The usual reason for no cartouche is that the stock has been heavily sanded at some point in the past. The M1866, 68 and 70 models for the most part used reworked Civil War musket stocks, which have flats around the lock and on the opposite side from the lock. It was very common in the 1870s and 80s to round those off to make early models look like the later 45-70s, which would remove the cartouches. It was also common to sand stocks in an effort to refinish them, sometimes rather aggressively. The cartouches may be hidden by a buildup of grime, in which case a CAREFUL cleaning will reveal them. Replacement stocks are not uncommon as the long wrist musket stocks tended to break through the wrist area. A replacement stock should have the stock inspectors initials, and on later rifles the Box L stamp, at the back of the trigger plate, even though the cartouches opposite the lock are missing.
