Just acquired 1866 unusual

While I am confident that this was a standard 1866 with no SN. it has been significantly modified by someone.
1. Barrel cut to 23”
2. Dovetails cut for front and rear sights (very basic post and fixed rear sight.)
3. Here is my real question — the stock appears to have been nicely modified for the short barrel. One retaining ring with proper latch to hold the ring and a metal cap at the end of the stock. No cartouche visible.
Has anyone seen this before?
