Number on top of Buttplate?

Still learning a lot about these amazing pieces of American military history.

Any idea if this 4 represent a rack number, a unit designation, or maybe 1864 period of use? On the other Springfield trapdoors I’ve looked at I don’t remember seeing a number in this location. On a KRAG that I have it has number and letters which is a unit designation.
