After the trials, the guns were returned and refurbished. In the 1890s, they were distributed to guard units throughout the US. A number of them were issued to units in the Cincinnati, Ohio area.
The Model 1886 carbine is a full stocked gun with a 24" barrel. The arm has only one barrel band and the tip of the stock is not capped. The lower sling loop is located near the butt plate rather than on the trigger guard bow, and the rear sight is stamped "XC" on the base and ladder.
