Where to go for Trapdoors now?

Post by Jason C »

Hi,

I dealt with Al a few times, when I got my mint M1884 from him, along with the bayonet, then a copy of his book.

I’m in the market for a nice carbine to add to my collection (I also have an unfireable M1888 ram rod bayonet rifle, unfortunately the barrel is so pitted and eroded at the throat that it is completely inaccurate. Only wish I could replace or refurbish the barrel, but living in New Zealand it’s a long way from anyone who knows these old guns).

Where or who is a good place to go for a later model (Buffington sighted) carbine? I’m loathe to try gunbroker as the chances of getting ripped off seem high and many won’t ship internationally.

Any direction would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Jason

May I suggest Lodgewood MFG. They have a couple Trapdoors listed.

Also oldguns.net, run by our host, John Spangler. As to the 1888, I'm sure the barrel could be relined. There is a great guy in Pennsylvania, but he has a long waiting list. Can you ship a barrel back and forth without too much legal hassle? The barrels are all the same. Have you considered getting one off eBay? I'm sure you could get the bayonet housing swapped locally. You'd have to relocate the front sight for it to look perfect.

Lodgewood has a really nice M80 triangular rod bayonet at a decent price. If I didn’t already have one I’d be tempted to buy it.
