Sight Adjustment Tool

Post by 40-65rl »

I have an 1884 Springfield trapdoor with the Buffington sight. I know there are folks who use a tool, like a micrometer tool of some kind, to adjust the sight in a more repeatable way than just eyeballing it. I am yet to find someone who can make one of these for me or find a source to buy a something that will work. I am open to knowing what other trapdoor shooters use to get repeatable sight settings on their Buffington sights. It doesn't necessarily need to be a micrometer. I do not want to install a different sight on the rifle.

Try a cheap (plastic will do) dial caliper. Use the rod to measure from "slider" to the frame of the "ladder". Record reading for each range.

Visit the Shiloh site and look up a poster named Woody he shoots with the Buffington sight at long range and constructed a nice tool made off a modified part of a micrometer. He does not sell them but a picture of one is there and any machinist could build one.

Thanks for the replies. Woody is a good friend but will not make one for me, go figure. I have a photo. Guess I'll look for a machinist.

There are pictures so the idea is there for use. I do not know if he still makes shooting the boxes as well since his cataract surgery.

Woody is still making his line boxes, rifle cradles and range boxes.
