When it dries it leaves metal exposed to rust. Kroil , PB blaster and WD 40 are great for bore cleaning and the first two for helping in surface rust removal techniques. Nver get any of them on old original finish wood. For decades I have taken vaseline and evaporated the liquid oils form it in a hot environment of long periods - like an attic for example. The thick waxy residue works great on wood and does not mar old patina like cleaners DO !.
