Color case hardening on my 1884

Post by Fred Gaarde »

Using the FLASH mode on my iPhone, the photos of the breech block on my Model 1884 Trapdoor showed how brilliant the color case hardening really is.

Beautiful. None of the current people doing case coloring can even come close to the arsenal work.

I know you know this, but . . . .
It’s ONLY the breechblock and tang that received the color-case hardening colors . . .NOT the receiver.
Beautiful color!

Ahh yes - the 1889-era stuff that was put away brand-new!! Gorgeous... And yes, no one gets it right today.

Those pics may tempt me to get a couple of mine out of their rat-hole....My Sharps-sighted long range was close, but, alas, I no longer have it....

Dick, the colors only show up clearly when I use my Flash. Otherwise they appear subdued.

Sometimes I marvel, in looking at the sculptured steel, polished walnut, and fiery colors, that these jewels were actually handed out to regular grunts as TOOLS! How sad-looking (even if exponentially more effective) the current pieces of ill-fitting black plastic shit really are, by comparison...
