Officer group photo

Post by 45govt »

Hello
I was going through some "stuff" and found this that I hadn't scanned.
Being 11x14 I had to cut it down a bit on the scanner
It is an interesting group as there are many different units and troops represented
There are a few marksman and a sharpshooter and two Distinguished Marksman
You may have to go to Pbase to see it in its full size but it is worth it
Also the Officer on the right is ID'd on the back as Pershing
Hope this works

I went ahead and posted a small copy but go over to Pbase to see detail

Officer standing right does not look like John J. Pershing.

Officer seated second from right at the front looks more like him.
Perhaps a class photo from War College or something similar?

Dick. I wondered if that was fashion in the day. We used to have Indian war conferences here at the Autry museum when John Langellier was there and the question was asked by someone and the answer was " Try shaving your upper lip with a straight razor" Perhaps it is harder that it looks?

A site devoted to the Command and General Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth uses this as a header, so that is the probable location.

I do not know for sure if JJP ever attended C&GS College.
He had an interesting career- Teddy Roosevelt knew him from San Juan Hill and the 10th Cav, and wanted to jump him from Captain to Colonel, but War Department refused. But, War Dept approval was NOT needed for nominations to Brigadier General, to Pershing never served as a Colonel or Lt. Col, and I think his service as a Major was as a Volunteer, not Regular Army. Besides knowing the President, it did not hurt that he married the daughter of the Senate Armed Services Committee.
