Sounds like a fun project to create the rod. rod is .190 for long length diameter , swell for rod retainer .350, tip is .400. Start with a .5 carbon steel rod and use double steady rest on your lathe to keep whip down while turning to shape. Best to borrow an original to copy to get correct dimensio...

Shephunter, Based on one I have very close in number to yours it will be SWP 1881 cartouche. Most agree it is rebuilt using some parts from turned it rifles and Carbines and issued to militia units. Nice find enjoy it.

Glad to hear that news. Better would be no discharge at all. I believe the show is by invitation only unless things have changed so doubt the individual will be allowed back at all.

Dick. I wondered if that was fashion in the day. We used to have Indian war conferences here at the Autry museum when John Langellier was there and the question was asked by someone and the answer was " Try shaving your upper lip with a straight razor" Perhaps it is harder that it looks?

bigdave1, I have to admit now that I am old that for many years it was common in the group I shoot with to swap or hi-grade parts from one rifle to another. the sell the one on.
