Re: New cartridge
That's Berdan primed. Only loaded for two months, March & April of 1877. I have a single round and a heavily-worn April (empty) box. March rounds are even rarer, and no March boxes are known.
Re: New cartridge
Nice box Dick
This case has the Gill removable anvil as in this Butteiller catalog
Their are Benet inside primed cases marked R F 4 77 as well

Re: New cartridge
Tom Trevor is having problems with Win 11 posting photos so he sent this to me to post
It is a full unopened box of R F 4 77
I have question, would there be a different box for the Gill Berdan primed cases stating something about Gill patent, like the boxes marked "Bloomfield..." or Manhattan.." boxes?

Re: New cartridge
And an even nicer one! Where will this end? A full box of "US Carbine"?
Cannot answer question about surcharged Berdan boxes, except that I've never seen one - perhaps ALL of the Berdan stuff used the Gill anvil? The Buttweiler catalogs had a lot of good items, and are still helpful for reference...

Re: New cartridge
WOW!
Good stuff there, and really scarce.
It is important to study ammunition too, otherwise the trapdoor rifle is only a very complex bayonet holder, no more effective than the spears or lances used by the Roman empire.
